So, if anyone remembers these three red oak slabs we purchased back in December at an auction, we recently found out the backstory behind these beauties. The tree was cut down on a board members property of the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. This tree overlooked the Lynnhaven River for 225 years, and due to some health issues of the tree, they had to have it cut down. They milled them into the slabs you see there (and a few others) that they donated to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens. They were sold accidentally to us, but the Norfolk Botanical Gardens reached out to us and told us the story behind these pieces. Hearing that these amazing slabs were 225 years old and overlooked a local river for that long and thinking about what these trees have seen and lived through is amazing. We are gladly donating these slabs back to the Norfolk Botanical Gardens to be used as displays for their new visitor center. We will be working closely with their team to build these new pieces, so be on the lookout for when you visit the Norfolk Botanical Gardens in the near future. We can't wait to give back to the local community and re-purpose these pieces to continue to benefit from nature's inherent beauty.

Against The Grain Woodcraft is a veteran owned local father & son woodworking business based in Norfolk, VA. We strive to use only the best wood for our projects from our area and maintain sustainability within our local woodworking community. Every piece of our wood furniture is as unique as the tree it came from. The grain will vary based on the part of the tree and how it’s milled, may show natural patterns like tiger striping, and develops its own character as it ages. Items made to order currently have a turnaround time of up to 4-12 weeks or more. The client must indicate at the time of payment if the item is needed by a particular date or time. All our items are handmade and made to order. We can deliver for an additional charge, determined upon mileage, to deliver the client's item. We are not to be held liable for any damage caused once the item has been unloaded and left in the customer's possession.

It is the customer's responsibility to ensure the custom piece fits through all walk areas of your home or space; after the item is built, we are not liable for its fitting. There are a lot of tight spaces in some homes and businesses, and not all entryways are the same size. Please plan ahead of your delivery. Due to the character of wood and various species, sometimes knots and natural imperfections are present. We work with our clients to handpick the best slabs or lumber needed for your project, but minor imperfections help add to the character of our handmade items.

Our goal is to ensure that our customers get exactly what they’re requesting from us and walk away happy and pleased with a new custom item they’re proud to display in their homes or businesses. If you are not 100% satisfied with your new item, please send us a private message, and allow us to correct any possible issues.
